Molecular Biology

The molecular biology section uses diagnostic Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) tests  to rapidly identify pathogenic microorganisms. Closely related organisms can be differentiated and small numbers of pathogens can be detected in complex clinical samples. PCR tests are faster than other conventional methods such as bacterial culture or virus isolation.

Our  laboratory is equipped with state-of-the-art equipment and facilities including conventional and real-time PCR equipment, as well as high-throughput automated extraction and liquid handling systems. A wide variety of tests are available  for several infectious agents from many animal species including horses, cattle, dogs and poultry.  Results can be obtained as early as 24 hours from specimen receipt, in most cases. For the complete list of molecular tests, appropriate sample  submission, fees and turn-around times,  please see our web site (Test Information).

The Molecular Biology Laboratory operates within a Quality Assurance System that complies with  Essential Requirements of the American Association of Veterinary Laboratory Diagnosticians. The Molecular Biology Laboratory participates several proficiency testings conducted by the Test Information).
