University of Kentucky Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory has validated a real-time PCR Panel for Canine Infectious Respiratory Disease
Several bacterial and viral pathogens can cause canine infectious respiratory disease (CIRD). An accurate diagnosis based on clinical signs alone can be difficult to achieve, since many pathogens may cause similar clinical signs. Therefore, a quick and accurate molecular diagnostic panel has been validated to identify the presence of multiple CIRD pathogens. This real-time PCR panel can detect Mycoplasma cynos, Mycoplasma canis, Bordetella bronchiseptica, canine adenovirus type 2, canine herpesvirus 1, canine parainfluenza virus, canine distemper virus, canine influenza virus A, and canine respiratory coronavirus.
Sample types: Respiratory swabs (nasal and/or nasopharyngeal) from clinically affected animals or postmortem tissues from the respiratory tract (e.g., lung and trachea) of deceased animals.
It is recommended to test dogs during the early stages of disease and before initiation of antimicrobial treatment. Additional tests such as bacterial, fungal, or viral cultures and next generation sequencing can also be requested, for additional fees, if other pathogens are suspected.
Fee: $130.00/sample
Turn-around time: Two working days.

Real-time PCR Panel for Equine Hepatitis Viruses
The University of Kentucky Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory has validated an Equine Hepatitis real-time-PCR panel to detect Equine Parvovirus and Equine Hepacivirus in clinical samples. These assays can be performed either individually for Equine Parvovirus or Equine Hepacivirus or together as the Equine Hepatitis Panel.
Both viruses have been reported to cause hepatitis in experimental horse models and have been associated with liver disease in naturally infected, clinically ill horses. As both viruses can be present in clinically normal horses, PCR results should be interpreted in conjunction with history, clinical findings, and other laboratory results.
Sample types: Serum, plasma, whole blood (purple top-EDTA), liver, liver biopsy (not formalin-fixed)
Fee: $55.00/sample (panel); $32.00/sample (individual virus)
Turn-around time: Two working days

Brucella canis Antibody Testing
The current Brucella canis antibody test (via RSAT & 2ME-RSAT) utilized at UKVDL will be transitioned to an ELISA Brucella spp. antibody test kit. This is in response to the current test kit being discontinued by the manufacturer. The test price per sample ($17.50) for Brucella canis testing at UKVDL will not change, but the ELISA test is scheduled to be ran twice a week (Wednesdays/Fridays) at this time.
Method: ELISA Brucella spp. antibody test kit
Specimen type (optimal amount): Serum (1.5 ml serum or 7 ml red top tube without separator gel)
Fee: $17.50 per sample
Test Schedule: Wednesday/Friday; samples must be received by noon for same-day testing
