Veterinary Anatomic Pathology Residency

The University of Kentucky Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory (UKVDL) resides within the heart of the Bluegrass and Thoroughbred industry. The diagnostic laboratory sees roughly 3,000 autopsy accessions and 2500 biopsy accessions annually which are read and interpreted by 7 veterinary pathologists (6 ACVP boarded). Autopsy caseload consists of roughly 50% equine, 25% bovine, and 25% companion animal, poultry, and exotic cases. With this vibrant caseload, UK offers a residency training program and accepts one qualified candidate annually. Trainees have an opportunity to work alongside each of our diagnostic pathologists and will be ACVP boards eligible at the end of the three-year program. Trainees will participate in autopsy, biopsy and cytology service. In addition, are opportunities to participate in the instruction of 4th year Veterinary Students through Lincoln Memorial University College of Veterinary Medicine clinical rotation, opportunities to teach in the didactic years at LMU or within various departments at UK. The Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory resides within the department of Veterinary Science within UK’s College of Agriculture, Food and Environment. Opportunities for a Master's or Doctoral degree although not required, are available and can be incorporated into the residency program based on trainee interest. Residency candidates must possess a DVM from an AVMA accredited veterinary college prior to the start of residency and have demonstrated an interest and dedication to the field of veterinary anatomic pathology.

Outreach

Veterinary pathology is the study of diseases within animals. Some diseases are easily transmissible to other animals as well as transmissible to people (zoonotic), therefore veterinary pathology is a very important specialty within the veterinary medical field. Providing animal pathology lab exhibits allows participants the opportunity to indulge in an interactive hands-on experience within a non-traditional career path of veterinary medicine. Patrons are exposed and educated about pathology, veterinary medicine, and the various specialties available for aspiring veterinarians as well as those interested in STEM careers. Please contact Dr. Uneeda Bryant (ubryant@uky.edu) for more information.
