Molecular Biology Overview

The Molecular Biology section uses diagnostic Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) tests to rapidly identify pathogenic microorganisms. Closely related organisms can be differentiated and small numbers of pathogens can be detected in complex clinical samples. PCR tests are faster than other conventional methods such as bacterial culture or virus isolation.

Fresh tissue, swab, blood, urine, feces, and any other biological material can be tested for Molecular tests (PCR).  Please refer to individual test for specific guidelines.

Use synthetic or semi-synthetic swabs (e.g., polyester, rayon, nylon) with a plastic handle (flocked or spun head).  Avoid cotton or calcium alginate swabs or swabs with wooden handles which have been shown to inhibit PCR invalidating the laboratory test results. Avoid charcoal swabs for PCR testing.

If pooling is requested, please send tissues or fecal material in separate containers so that we can pool the samples in the lab.

If you have a large number of samples to submit, please notify the lab in advance. Samples should be shipped overnight on ice in a clearly labeled, leak-proof container.

If you have a question regarding the type of sample you have, please feel free to call and ask about the sample type.

Our laboratory is equipped with state-of-the-art equipment and facilities including conventional and real-time PCR equipment, as well as high-throughput automated extraction and liquid handling systems. A wide variety of tests are available for several infectious agents from many animal species including horses, cattle, dogs and poultry. Results can be obtained as early as 24 hours from specimen receipt, in most cases. For the complete list of molecular tests, appropriate sample submission, fees and turn-around times, please see our web site.

The Molecular Biology Laboratory operates within a Quality Assurance System that complies with Essential Requirements of the American Association of Veterinary Laboratory Diagnosticians.

The Molecular Biology Laboratory participates several proficiency testing conducted by the National Veterinary Services Laboratory. These tests are Avian Influenza Virus, Avian Paramyxovirus-1/Exotic Newcastle Disease, Foot and Mouth Disease and Classical Swine Fever Virus.
